Yesterday I went to a town hall meeting with John Cornyn, US
Senator for the great state of Texas.
I wanted to voice my opinions about the current tripe that has hit the senate
floor in addition to find out why Cornyn and Hutchison voted against the Vitter
amendment which would have in effect killed this bill.
I was greeted by Andy Rittler, North Texas Regional Director,
working for Mr. Cornyn. I take it that he has remembered my name from my many
letters and faxes because he said he personally printed a name tag for me when
he questioned a hand written badge adorning my shirt pocket. I replied you
might call security because some one must be impersonating me. I told Andy my
main purpose for being there was to find out why Mr. Cornyn voted against the
Vitter amendment? Andy replied that Senator Cornyn was going to address that
but in a nut shell it was because he felt that would have limited any efforts
to improve the bill should it pass. I also gave Andy my current translation for
the GOP acronym…Gutless Obsequious Panderers which left Andy speechless. He
recovered stating that that was not the case in Mr. Cornyn’s office and Staff.
I didn’t debate this statement because Mr. Cornyn came up to
shake my hand. I was impressed by Andy’s and Mr. Cornyn’s handshake which gave
me a glimmer of hope. My experience in the past is those that offer a limp fish
when pressing the flesh are of dubious character. I shared a conversation that
I just had with the gentleman next to me about the $35 lawn service. That
person who has subscribed to this service thinks it is a bargain but I added if
the penalty was $10,000 for every illegal alien caught working on his property
he wouldn’t think it was such a bargain if he was caught.
I don’t believe that Mr. Cornyn was prepared for the level
of vitriol and passion that this amnesty legislation has brought out of his
constituents. The overwhelming sentiment is this bill needs to be killed at all
costs because no legislation is better than this legislation. Signs adorned the
room stating, “No Amnesty, No Anchor Babies!”
At one point Mr. Cornyn stated he would support one type of
guest worker program which brought instant jeers. An obvious economics student
stood up and gave a very eloquent argument against this stance citing the
indicators for the US
workforce have been stagnant for several years indicating and there is no need
for temporary workers. This is just propaganda spouted by the corporate barons
fearing losing their supply of cheap labor. This brought a deafening round of
cheers and applause that Mr. Cornyn chose not to debate.
In conclusion I felt that he couldn’t misinterpret the
sentiments of his constituents regarding the amnesty legislation being debated
and the consequences associated with supporting this bill. It would be akin to
voting for you own early retirement and may very well be the exit of Kyl,
Graham, Isakson and McCain from the Senate.
